Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has announced that the government is working to reduce electricity prices, with a goal of bringing the cost down to Rs 10 per unit. Speaking at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Energy, Leghari stated that discussions with the IMF on captive power plants are ongoing. He expressed optimism that the issue of captive power plants will be resolved by the end of the month.
Leghari also revealed plans to review 24 bagasse plants, which will help determine the return on equity for government plants. Additionally, he noted that electricity prices have already decreased by Rs 4 for domestic consumers.
The minister’s commitment to reducing electricity prices is a welcome development, especially given the government’s efforts to improve the power sector. As Leghari mentioned, the power sector has shown marked improvement in electricity prices since June 2024
